ROUNDERS

Rounders is a bat and ball game involving two teams, each of which take turns batting and fielding. When a team is fielding a ‘Pitcher’ or ‘Bowler’ pitches (throws) the ball at the batter. The batter must strike the ball with his or her bat and run around the four bases back to home plate where he or she struck the ball, without being caught or run out. This is called a ‘Run’ (point). After a pre-determined number of Batters is out, the Batting team and fielding team switch places. This is called an ‘Innings’. After a preset number of Innings the team with most runs is declared the winner. The game was possibly first played in England in the 1500s and was first codified by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) in Ireland in 1884. Reference: [14].

Report

Due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic the GAA Rounders 2020 season was reduced to just two groups of four each playing a single-round robin in the Senior Ladies All-Ireland Championship. Adamstown Rounders, Erne Eagles and Limekiln Rounders GAA played out a very competitive Group A with Adamstown finishing first on 14 points, Erne Eagles second on 13 and Limekiln third on 12. Cuchulainn finished out of the running with three straight losses. In Group B Glynn Barntown won the Group title with a close 9-8 victory over Breaffy GAA in the Final Gameweek, leaving Breaffy in second, with Michael Glaveys third and Barntown Gaels fourth.

The All-Ireland Finals were postponed until after the lockdown restrictions are due to be lifted in May 2021. On June 13th 2021 in Abbottstown, Dublin (National Sports Centre) Breaffy held out to win 8-6 with the play of the day happening in the bottom of the 6th inning when Avril Coyne caught the batter out at second base and fired the ball back to Home Base to get a runner out there, leaving Glynn-Barntown to score three to win and two to draw. Breaffy closed out the match with a catch by Olivia Tolster in what was a real defensive battle according to reports with great fielding by Katie Kenny and Michelle Hopkins for the Mayo team.

Report

Limekiln of Dublin won a highly competitive Senior Women’s All-Ireland Rounders Championship in 2005, triumphing in the Final over Carlow’s Bagenalstown. The team from Tymon Park in Tallaght had received a bye into the All-Ireland Playoffs with Bagenalstown contesting the other Leinster place with Ballon, also from Carlow. The Ulster Championship saw two close games involving Kildress from Tyrone which were decided by a single run, but it was to be Derry’s Desertmartin and Cavan’s Erne Eagles who made it through to the All-Ireland Playoffs. The fourth team in the Ulster round-robin group was Ni Mhichil from Derry.

About Rounders

Rounders is an Irish and British version of Softball and Baseball, and thought to be the ancestor of both. It was first codified in Ireland as part of the Original GAA Charter of 1884, but not organised until 1958. It is a Bat and Ball (also known as Safe Haven) sport whereby the batter attempts to hit a ball thrown at him or her by a pitcher or bowler and then attempts to run around the bases back home.
