Round by Round Recaps

Round 1 Recap

With the start of the GAA Allianz Football League in 2022 coinciding with the lifting of restrictions on gatherings, the return of spectators to GAA games was welcome. Armagh scored a shock 2-15 (21 Points) to 1-13 (16 Points) victory over Dublin on Saturday the 29th of January in the opening fixture. Sunday’s fixtures saw three draws with Kerry scoring the only goal in atrocious weather: Kildare 0-13 Kerry 1-10; Mayo 0-11 Donegal 0-11 and Tyrone 0-9 Monaghan 0-9. The Results left Armagh in top position after Round 1 with Dublin surprisingly being the only team left pointless [Round 1 References: 2-4].

Round 2 Recap

Armagh moved to the top of Roinn 1 with a 2-14 to 0-14 (20 points to 14) defeat of Ulster rivals Tyrone on Sunday the 6th of February. Kerry consigned Dublin to their second loss in two games with a 1-15 (18 points) to 0-11 (11 points) win which put Kerry in second place behind Armagh on 3 points. Joining the Kingdom on 3 points were Donegal (2-11 to 1-9 winners over Kildare) and Mayo (2-10 to 1-11 victors against Monaghan). The losses left Kildare, Monaghan and Tyrone on 1 point each [Round 2 References: 2-4].

Round 3 Recap

Kerry went top of the table on points difference after defeating Donegal 1-13 to 0-7, and were joined on five points by Armagh who drew with Monaghan (1-7 to 0-10) and Mayo who had an excellent win against struggling Dublin (2-11 to 0-12). The loss left Dublin rooted to the bottom of the table on no points, having lost all three games so far. The fourth game saw Tyrone win 2-7 to 0-12 against Kildare, leaving Kildare in second last on one point and moving Tyrone up to fifth, level on three points with fourth placed Donegal. [Reference: 2-4]

Round 4 Recap

Dublin suffered their fourth defeat in four games when going down 0-12 to 1-12 to Kildare, which put Kildare back in the reckoning on three points. Kerry stayed top with a big win over Monaghan (3-14 to 1-12), putting them on seven points, along with Mayo, who had a narrow two point victory over Armagh (0-15 to 1-12), who suffered their first loss of the campaign. Joining Armagh on five points were Donegal who had a 2-10 to 0-12 victory over Tyrone, who remained on three points alongside Kildare, one above Ulster rivals Monaghan. Reference: 2-4]

Round 5 Recap

Dublin finally got off the mark with a 0-13 to 0-8 defeat of Tyrone, although the Dubs are still in last place in Roinn 1 despite the win, with Tyrone one place and one point above them. Kerry took top spot with a 1-12 to 0-14 defeat of Mayo, a single point victory enough to move the Kingdom to nine points, two above second placed Mayo. Armagh joined Mayo on seven points with a 1-12 to 0-10 win, leaving the Lillywhites on three points and in relegation trouble. Monaghan moved above both Tyrone and Kildare to four points with a 1-12 to 0-10 win at fellow Ulstermen and North West rivals Donegal. The loss left Donegal on five points. Reference: [2-4]

Round 6 Recap

Kerry were unassailable at the top of Roinn 1 on 11 points, four ahead of nearest challengers Mayo and Armagh, after a close win over Armagh with a single goal the difference between the counties. Mayo’s loss to Tyrone in a low-scoring encounter (0-9 to 0-11) brought Tryone out of the relegation places on five points, one ahead of a resurgent Dublin, who defeated Donegal by 2-15 to 2-11. Kildare also climbed to five points to level with Ulster counties Tyrone and Donegal with a big 0-24 to 1-12 win over Monaghan, consigning the North West county to the bottom spot with one round to go. [References: 2-4]

Round 7 Recap

Kerry and Mayo were due to meet in the GAA Allianz Football League Roinn 1 Final after Kerry finished top on 13 points with a win over Tyrone and Mayo defeated Kildare by eight points to finish second on nine points. Mayo’s closest rivals for second, Armagh, lost by a single point away to Donegal in an Ulster match-up as both counties finished on seven points. Monaghan defeated Dublin by a single point also, 3-13 to 1-18, as the Metropolitans were relegated in last place on four points. Kildare joined them in being relegated to Roinn 2 in a bad day for Leinster counties, as they lost out on head-to-head versus Tyrone after both finished on five points. Monaghan’s victory saw the Ulster county leapfrog over all three other counties in the bottom half of the table to finish on six points. References: [2-4]

Final Recap

Mayo lost yet another Final, and Kerry won yet another, by 3-19 to 0-13, more than doubling Mayo’s tally, as the Kingdom took the GAA Allianz Football League Roinn 1 title for 2022. [Results and Tables References: 4]

About GAA Allianz Football League

The GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) has its own brand of Football: Gaelic Football or simply GAA Football, in Ireland, played with 15 players per team, and goals worth three points and over-the-bar (points) worth one point (The goals are similar to Rugby but there is a Goalkeeper to prevent goals). It is like a cross between Soccer and Rugby, with players allowed handle the ball, but may not pick it up off the ground without the aid of their feet, and limited running with the ball [4-5].

The GAA Allianz Football League is the curtain-raiser to the Inter-County season, the Elite players representing their Counties as well as Clubs. It usually takes places in the first half of the GAA Inter-County season, from late January until the beginning of April when the Division finals are played. There are four Divisions, with promotion and relegation between the Divisions as in Soccer.
