Round 1 Recap

Limerick got off to a winning start with a 7 point victory over Louth (4-9 to 1-11) in a Shannonside fixture in the GAA Allianz Football League Roinn 3 in 2022. Joining them on 2 points after the first Round were Westmeath who had a five point win over Wicklow (1-16 to 2-8) and Laois who triumphed by 5 points also (3-9 to 1-10) in two All-Leinster clashes. The other fixture in Round 1 pitted Fermanagh and Antrim together in an All-Ulster affair, with Antrim prevailing by 9 points (1-14 to 0-8) to go top of the table. Round 1 References: 2-4]

Round 2 Recap

Limerick and Westmeath gained their second wins of the campaign with victories over Antrim (2-9 to 0-11) and Laois (2-11 to 0-11) respectively leaving Antrim and Laois in third and fourth on two points each. The remaing four counties all drew, Longford (0-9) and Louth (1-6) in a low-scoring affair and Wicklow (1-10) and Fermanagh (2-7) also gaining their first points of the season. References: 2-4]

Round 3 Recap

With two games postponed (Fermanagh v Laois and Westmeath v Longford) Antrim took the opportunity to join Westmeath and Limerick on four points at the top of the table with a 2-10 to 1-7 defeat of Wicklow. Limerick’s loss to Louth by two points (1-12 to 1-14) meant they missed the opportunity to go two points clear at the top, and meant Louth got in touch with the leaders on three points. Round 4 Recap

Limerick took over sole possession of first place with a 1-13 to 1-9 defeat of Wicklow, leaving Wicklow in last place on one point. Antrim could only draw with Laois (1-8 each) as they fell a point behind Limerick on five points. Louth moved into joint second on points with Antrim after a 1-15 to 1-13 victory over Westmeath, which left the Leinster Midland county on four points, one above both Laois and Fermanagh, with the Ulster county gaining a seven point (3-11 to 0-13) win over Longford, who like Wicklow were fighting relegation on one point. Round 3 Rescheduled Recap

In two rescheduled games from Round 3, Longford shocked Westmeath, gaining their first win of the season against their fellow North Leinstermen, by a score of 0-14 to 0-10. The win put them level on points with Laois after the Portlaoise-based county lost by six points to Fermanagh, who moved up to five points, just a point behind Roinn 3 leaders Limerick. Round 5 Recap

Six counties were still in contention after round 5, with Antrim leading the way on seven points following a 1-19 to 0-12 defeat of Longford, who were now all but out of the running on three points. Louth joined Antrim on seven points with a 2-12 to 0-14 win at Fermanagh who remained on five points. Westmeath and Limerick were both on six points following Westmeath’s six point win (1-12 to 1-6) over the Treaty County and fellow Shannonsiders. Laois also got into contention with a 1-17 to 0-8 win at Wicklow who remained last on one point. Reference: [2-4]

Round 6 Recap

Roinn 3 was still very open after Round 6 with Louth in first place after a 1-15 to 1-11 defeat of Antrim in a clash of the top two counties. The other three games were extremely close with one point wins for Limerick and Wicklow over Laois and Longford respectively. Limerick’s victory put them in second place on eight points while Wicklow’s victory over Longford saw them move above the midlanders into seventh, with both counties on three points. Laois’s loss dropped them from contention. Meanwhile a draw between Fermanagh and Westmeath left the two counties in mid-table with an outside shot going into the Final Round. [References: 2-4]

Round 7 Recap

Louth defeated Wicklow by seven points to finish top of the league stage in Roinn 3, with Limerick joining the wee county in the Final after a five point win over Fermanagh. Westmeath took third ahead of Antrim after defeating the men from the Glens by five points to finish on nine points, one behind Limerick and two ahead of Antrim. In an important relegation battle Longford defeated Laois by the seven points to finish above the Queen’s County on head-to-head. Wicklow finished last and were relegated [References: 2-4]

ABOUT GAA ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) has its own brand of Football: Gaelic Football or simply GAA Football, in Ireland, played with 15 players per team, and goals worth three points and over-the-bar (points) worth one point (The goals are similar to Rugby but there is a Goalkeeper to prevent goals). It is like a cross between Soccer and Rugby, with players allowed handle the ball, but may not pick it up off the ground without the aid of their feet, and limited running with the ball [4-5].

The GAA Allianz Football League is the curtain-raiser to the Inter-County season, the Elite players representing their Counties as well as Clubs. It usually takes places in the first half of the GAA Inter-County season, from late January until the beginning of April when the Division finals are played. There are four Divisions, with promotion and relegation between the Divisions as in Soccer.
