Round-by-Round Recap
Preliminary Round
Offaly sneaked by Wexford by a single point (3-11 to 2-13) in the Tailteann Cup Preliminary Round to meet Wicklow in Round 1 who defeated Waterford 3-16 to 1-10. [References: 3]
Round 1 (North)
Leitrim had a five point victory over Antrim (2-14 to 1-12) in the only Connacht v Ulster Round 1 (North) clash. Cavan defeated Down by nine points (0-24 to 1-12), while Leinster’s Longford lost 0-12 to 1-12 to Ulster’s Fermanagh and Sligo again had trouble winning their game with London by 3-15 to 2-16. Round 1 (South)
In two all-Leinster clashes Westmeath defeated Laois by 1-13 to 0-13 and Offaly won by eight points (0-18 to 0-10) versus Wicklow. With New York gaining a bye to the Quarter-Finals the only other game in Round 1 (South) was a two-point victory for Leinster’s Carlow versus Munster’s Tipperary (1-12 to 1-10).[References: 3]
Quarter-Finals (North)
Leitrim and Sligo battled to a draw which Sligo advanced from 4-3 on penalties [References: 4]. They were to go on to meet Cavan in the Northern Semi-Final after Cavan’s 2-16 to 0-13 victory over Fermanagh. [References: 3]
Quarter-Finals (South)
Offaly made light work of New York in an historic encounter, winning 3-17 to 0-11 in what was New York’s first ever appearance in an All-Ireland Series outside the Connacht Championship. The Faithful county was to meet Westmeath in the Southern Semi-Final who defeated Carlow 1-21 to 2-13. [References: 3]
Semi-Finals
Cavan defeated Sligo by 0-20 to 1-14 to reach the Tailteann Cup Final where they would meet Westmeath, who were victorious over Offaly by 3-22 to 2-16. [References: 3]
Tailteann Cup Final (9 July 2022)
Westmeath’s Gaelic Footballers won a rare honour when lifting the Tailteann Cup Tier 2 All-Ireland Championship. Westmeath defeated Cavan by 2-14 to 1-13 in the Final. [References: 3]
About the GAA Football Tailteann Cup
The GAA Football Tailteann Cup is a new Tier 2 All-Ireland GAA Football Senior Championship introduced in 2022 to give less successful counties a chance at winning an All-Ireland Championship. The Tailteann Cup features Counties knocked out in Round 1 or Quarter-Finals of their respective Provincial Championships.
