Carrickfergus Cougars vs Belfast Spartans

Carrickfergus Cougars trailed 6-7 after Hollowell scored for the Belfast Spartans in the first half, which the Spartans converted. Soon after the restart Hollowell added his second Touchdown of the day to make it 13-6 to Belfast.

With two minutes left on the clock Carrickfergus hit back, scoring a touchdown which was converted for two points after they ran in the extra point attempt to give Cougars a 14-13 lead. The Spartans replied immediately, as they marched right down the field, moving the ball 50 yards to set up a potential winning field goal attempt, which was charged down, giving the Cougars victory by the slenderest of margins.

Bangor Buccaneers vs Craigavon Cowboys

Craigavon Cowboys easily defeated the Bangor Buccaneers in this preseason warm-up game at Banbridge Showgrounds in early April 1987. Nigel Trimble ran in a 21 yard run and John Mullaly added a second touchdown when he caught a Geoff Donaghy pass from 25 yards to give the Cowboys a 13-0 halftime lead.

The second half continued as the first with Brendan McAleese catching a 14 yard touchdown and Stanley Kingsmill finishing the scoring with a nine yard run. McAleese added two extra points.

East Side Jets vs Bangor Buccaneers

East Side Jets’ preseason preparations continued well with a 7-2 victory versus Bangor Buccaneers – the Unkitted (Junior) League Champions from 1986. Bangor had taken the lead through a safety in the third quarter, but Mark Dunwoody ran in a 25 yard touchdown which capped off a 60-yard drive in the fourth quarter to give the Jets victory. Craig Dobbins added the extra point.

Aldergrove Hawks vs East Side Jets

Craig Dobbins scored the only points of the ganme when he ran in a touchdown after recovering a fumble to give the East Side Jets from Dundonald, Co. Down the win on their debut in the Irish American Football League preseason in 1987 versus Aldergrove Hawks at RAF Aldergrove.

Craigavon Cowboys vs Belfast Blitzers

In the first ever full contact kitted American Football match ever held in Northern Ireland and also between two Irish teams, Belfast Blitzers defeated Craigavon Cowboys 46-0 at Shane Park in Lurgan thanks to three touchdowns from Derek McCord and two touchdowns from Ivan Smith.

Dublin Celts vs Belfast Blitzers

Dublin Celts won the 1st Leg of the Capital Cup 46-7 in Dublin in the first ever fully kitted match between two Irish teams. it formed part of the preseason preparations for the first ever season in 1986. Dublin Celts were known as Captain West Celts for the occasion for sponsorship reasons.
