League Stage

Antrim and Kerry were to meet in the Joe McDonagh Cup Final two weeks after finishing the League Stage in a 0-29 to 2-21 victory for Kerry in the same fixture. The loss was Antrim’s first in the competition in 2022 and put Kerry over the line following Offaly’s shock 0-17 to 0-22 defeat to Carlow. With Kerry, Carlow and Offaly all finishing on six points, it was down to points difference to separate the counties. [References: 1-2]

Joe McDonagh Cup Final

ABOUT GAA HURLING

Hurling is an ancient Gaelic Irish Sport, and one of the four Charter GAA Sports of 1884. It is played with a Hurl or Hurley (stick) and a sliotar (ball) and is one of the fastest team sports in the world. It is 15-a-side and Goals (worth 3 points) are scored as well as points (over the bar – worth one point). It is organised on a Club and County basis like most GAA Sports and has County, Provncial and All-Ireland Championships. Within both Club and County Championships there is the Hurling League (usually run over winter) and the Hurling Championship (usually run over summer).

There are about 12 Top Level (Division 1) Counties that play for the Liam McCarthy Cup, as well as the Joe McDonagh Cup (Division 1B), Christy Ring Cup (Division 2), and Nicky Rackard (Division 3) and Lory Meaghar Cups (Division 4). Outside of Ireland there are 14 Counties that also play Gaelic Football and sometimes Hurling, with London, Warwickshire and Lancashire taking part in the lower levels of the All-Ireland Championships. The Christy Ring Cup is the Level 2 All-Ireland County Championship in Hurling, named after the great Cork player.

About the Leinster GAA Hurling Senior Championship 2022

The Leinster GAA Hurling Senior Championship (SHC) is one of two Provincial Championships at the highest level of Inter-County Hurling in Ireland in 2002. Six Counties entered the round-robin (league) Championship, with the winners and runners-up going on to meet in the Provincial Final. These two counties and the third placed county in the league stage also progress to the All-Ireland Championship with the Provincial Final winners receiving a bye to the All-Ireland semi-Finals; the Provincial Final runners-up meeting a Preliminary Quarter-Final winner in the All-Ireland Quarter-Finals, and the third-placed county in the league stage meeting the Joe McDonagh Cup Final runners-up in a Preliminary Quarter-Final. Five Leinster counties of the 12 in total competed: Dublin, Kilkenny, Laois, Westmeath and Wexford; as well as Connacht representatives Galway. [References: 3-4]

ABOUT MUNSTER GAA SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP 2022

The Munster GAA Senior Hurling Championship (SHC) is one of two Provincial Championships at the highest level of Inter-County Hurling in Ireland in 2022. Five of the Six Munster Counties entered the Round-Robin Championship, with the top two counties at the end of the League Stage meeting in the Munster Provincial Final. The Winners Qualify directly for the All-Ireland Semi-Final, while the runners-up qualify for the All-Ireland Quarter-Finals where they will meet the winners of the Preliminary Round Game between the Joe McDonagh Cup (2nd Division Hurling Cup) and the 3rd placed Leinster GAA Provincial Championship county. The winners of this Quarter-Final progress to the All-Ireland SHC Senior Hurling Championship Semi-Finals. [References: 3-4]
