ABOUT GAA ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) has its own brand of Football: Gaelic Football or simply GAA Football, in Ireland, played with 15 players per team, and goals worth three points and over-the-bar (points) worth one point (The goals are similar to Rugby but there is a Goalkeeper to prevent goals). It is like a cross between Soccer and Rugby, with players allowed handle the ball, but may not pick it up off the ground without the aid of their feet, and limited running with the ball [4-5].

The GAA Allianz Football League is the curtain-raiser to the Inter-County season, the Elite players representing their Counties as well as Clubs. It usually takes places in the first half of the GAA Inter-County season, from late January until the beginning of April when the Division finals are played. There are four Divisions, with promotion and relegation between the Divisions as in Soccer.

Round 1 Recap

All all-Ulster match-up between Derry and Down opened the GAA Allianz Football League Roinn 2 on Saturday the 29th of January 2022. With the welcome return of the spectators following the lifting of restrictions to gatherings, Derry fared better winning 1-10 (13 Points) to Down’s 0-6 (6 Points). The Sunday after saw all six counties in action, with wins for both Connacht counties – Roscommon defeating Cork by 6 points (1-13 to 0-10) and Galway breezing by Meath by 1-14 (17 Points) to 0-6 (6 Points). In the fourth game Clare also won by a wide margin, triumphing 1-13 to 0-7 versus Offaly [2-4].

Round 2 Recap

The two Connacht counties in Roinn 2, Roscommon and Galway both achieved their second win in a row to start the 2022 campaign with defeats of Meath (1-15 to 1-11) and Down (1-12 to 0-9). Joining them on 4 Points, also with their second victory were Derry who had a big win over Offaly (2-13 to 0-7). The losses left Meath, Down and Offaly pointless. In the other game, played on Saturday the 5th of February Cork and Clare battled to a 1-13 each draw. The draw left Cork struggling with one point and Clare in touch with the leaders on 3 points [References: 2-4]

Round 3 Recap

Derry continued their winning run defeating Cork 1-13 to 0-7, while Roscommon drew 0-9 each with Clare, leaving Roscommon a point behind leaders Derry, and Clare in fourth on three points. Galway’s game with Offaly was postponed and Down drew with Meath 2-6 apiece, in a battle between two pointless counties. The results meant Derry, Roscommon, Galway and Clare had now opened up a gap ogf three points or more on the other four counties, all of whom were on a single point with the exception of Offaly who had no points. Reference: [2-4]

Round 4 Recap

Derry and Galway contiuned with 100% records, Derry defeating Clare 2-13 to 0-10, handing Clare their first loss, while Galway triumphed 3-22 to 2-17 over Cork, who remained on one point. While Clare were not entirely out of the running yet, the top two spots at this stage look likely to be filled by either Derry, Galway or Roscommon who moved to second on seven points with an eleven point victory (1-18 to 0-10) over Down, who like Cork were still on one point. The fourth game of the weekend was a 1-10 all draw between Offaly and Meath which gave Offaly their first point of the season and moved Meath into fifth on two points. Reference: [2-4]

Round 3 Rescheduled Recap

Galway defeated Offaly by 2-17 to 3-10 in a rescheduled game from Round 3 to go top of the Roinn 1 table, on points difference from Derry, both having won all four of their games. Offaly remain rooted to the foot of the table on one point. Reference: [1]

Round 5 Recap

Galway continued to set the pace with a 2-8 to 1-5 victory over Clare, leaving Clare still on four points, and giving Galway their fifth win in a row to start the season. Connacht neighbours and rivals Roscommon did the Westerners a big favour by holding Derry to a 0-12 each draw, leaving Derry on nine points after dropping their first point of the season. Roscommon remained a point behind the Ulstermen on eight points. In the bottom half of the table Meath eased their relegation worries with a 1-18 to 1-10 defeat of Cork, as the Royal county moved to four points and the Leesiders remained bottom on one point. Offaly defeated Down by a single point (0-15 to 0-14) to move on to three points and off the bottom two as Down remained on one point with Cork. Reference: [2-4]

Round 6 Recap

Galway maintained their 100% record with a four-goal demolishing on Derry, winning by 4-11 to 0-12, handing Derry their first loss of the campaign. Connacht and nearest rivals Roscommon also had a big win, 2-18 to 0-14 versus Offaly. Meath moved clear in fourth ahead of Clare, winning by a single point in a low-scoring game, 0-10 to 0-9, while the battle of the two counties in the relegation zone, saw a win for Cork over Down (1-16 to 1-12), moving the Rebel County out of the dropzone in the process. [References: [2-4]

Round 7 Recap

Roscommon ended Galway’s 100% record on the last day of the league stage with a 1-20 to 1-15 victory. The two counties were to meet again in the Final after both finished on 12 points. Derry ran them both close finishing on 11 points after a 1-16 to 2-11 defeat of Meath who finished on six points along with Clare who won 2-14 to 1-9 at Down. Down’s defeat left them finishing last on one point, and they were joined in Roinn 3 for 2023 by Offaly who lost to Cork by one point in the crucial relegation battle, both Counties on three points coming into the match. [References: 2-4]

Roinn 2 is the second level.

Round by Round Recaps

Round 1 Recap

With the start of the GAA Allianz Football League in 2022 coinciding with the lifting of restrictions on gatherings, the return of spectators to GAA games was welcome. Armagh scored a shock 2-15 (21 Points) to 1-13 (16 Points) victory over Dublin on Saturday the 29th of January in the opening fixture. Sunday’s fixtures saw three draws with Kerry scoring the only goal in atrocious weather: Kildare 0-13 Kerry 1-10; Mayo 0-11 Donegal 0-11 and Tyrone 0-9 Monaghan 0-9. The Results left Armagh in top position after Round 1 with Dublin surprisingly being the only team left pointless [Round 1 References: 2-4].

Round 2 Recap

Armagh moved to the top of Roinn 1 with a 2-14 to 0-14 (20 points to 14) defeat of Ulster rivals Tyrone on Sunday the 6th of February. Kerry consigned Dublin to their second loss in two games with a 1-15 (18 points) to 0-11 (11 points) win which put Kerry in second place behind Armagh on 3 points. Joining the Kingdom on 3 points were Donegal (2-11 to 1-9 winners over Kildare) and Mayo (2-10 to 1-11 victors against Monaghan). The losses left Kildare, Monaghan and Tyrone on 1 point each [Round 2 References: 2-4].

Round 3 Recap

Kerry went top of the table on points difference after defeating Donegal 1-13 to 0-7, and were joined on five points by Armagh who drew with Monaghan (1-7 to 0-10) and Mayo who had an excellent win against struggling Dublin (2-11 to 0-12). The loss left Dublin rooted to the bottom of the table on no points, having lost all three games so far. The fourth game saw Tyrone win 2-7 to 0-12 against Kildare, leaving Kildare in second last on one point and moving Tyrone up to fifth, level on three points with fourth placed Donegal. [Reference: 2-4]

Round 4 Recap

Dublin suffered their fourth defeat in four games when going down 0-12 to 1-12 to Kildare, which put Kildare back in the reckoning on three points. Kerry stayed top with a big win over Monaghan (3-14 to 1-12), putting them on seven points, along with Mayo, who had a narrow two point victory over Armagh (0-15 to 1-12), who suffered their first loss of the campaign. Joining Armagh on five points were Donegal who had a 2-10 to 0-12 victory over Tyrone, who remained on three points alongside Kildare, one above Ulster rivals Monaghan. Reference: 2-4]

Round 5 Recap

Dublin finally got off the mark with a 0-13 to 0-8 defeat of Tyrone, although the Dubs are still in last place in Roinn 1 despite the win, with Tyrone one place and one point above them. Kerry took top spot with a 1-12 to 0-14 defeat of Mayo, a single point victory enough to move the Kingdom to nine points, two above second placed Mayo. Armagh joined Mayo on seven points with a 1-12 to 0-10 win, leaving the Lillywhites on three points and in relegation trouble. Monaghan moved above both Tyrone and Kildare to four points with a 1-12 to 0-10 win at fellow Ulstermen and North West rivals Donegal. The loss left Donegal on five points. Reference: [2-4]

Round 6 Recap

Kerry were unassailable at the top of Roinn 1 on 11 points, four ahead of nearest challengers Mayo and Armagh, after a close win over Armagh with a single goal the difference between the counties. Mayo’s loss to Tyrone in a low-scoring encounter (0-9 to 0-11) brought Tryone out of the relegation places on five points, one ahead of a resurgent Dublin, who defeated Donegal by 2-15 to 2-11. Kildare also climbed to five points to level with Ulster counties Tyrone and Donegal with a big 0-24 to 1-12 win over Monaghan, consigning the North West county to the bottom spot with one round to go. [References: 2-4]

Round 7 Recap

Kerry and Mayo were due to meet in the GAA Allianz Football League Roinn 1 Final after Kerry finished top on 13 points with a win over Tyrone and Mayo defeated Kildare by eight points to finish second on nine points. Mayo’s closest rivals for second, Armagh, lost by a single point away to Donegal in an Ulster match-up as both counties finished on seven points. Monaghan defeated Dublin by a single point also, 3-13 to 1-18, as the Metropolitans were relegated in last place on four points. Kildare joined them in being relegated to Roinn 2 in a bad day for Leinster counties, as they lost out on head-to-head versus Tyrone after both finished on five points. Monaghan’s victory saw the Ulster county leapfrog over all three other counties in the bottom half of the table to finish on six points. References: [2-4]

Final Recap

Mayo lost yet another Final, and Kerry won yet another, by 3-19 to 0-13, more than doubling Mayo’s tally, as the Kingdom took the GAA Allianz Football League Roinn 1 title for 2022. [Results and Tables References: 4]

Report

Meath won the GAA Hurling Christy Ring Cup (Division 2 All Ireland) in 2016, by a point over Antrim after a replay. They had earlier beaten Wicklow, London and Kildare. In all, eight counties were eligible for the Christy Ring Cup, Meath. Kildare and Wicklow (Leinster), Antrim, Derry, Down (Ulster), Roscommon (Connacht) and London (Britain). Meath fell 1-7 to 0-1 behind after only 19 minutes, but a dramatic late comeback, spearheaded by substitute Sean Quigley, who only came on in the 64th minute, saw Meath claim a first ever Christy Ring Cup by a point (2-18 to 1-20), or so it seemed, as the score was later shown to be erroneuous, and aReplay needed, this time Meath winning by a point (4-21 to 5-17). Stephen Clynch hit the last-minute point from a free in extra-time in the replay, in what turned out to be a nine-goal thriller.
