ROUNDERS

Rounders is a bat and ball game involving two teams, each of which take turns batting and fielding. When a team is fielding a ‘Pitcher’ or ‘Bowler’ pitches (throws) the ball at the batter. The batter must strike the ball with his or her bat and run around the four bases back to home plate where he or she struck the ball, without being caught or run out. This is called a ‘Run’ (point). After a pre-determined number of Batters is out, the Batting team and fielding team switch places. This is called an ‘Innings’. After a preset number of Innings the team with most runs is declared the winner. The game was possibly first played in England in the 1500s and was first codified by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) in Ireland in 1884. Reference: [14].

Report

Erne Eagles won four Rounders Association of Ireland All-Ireland Senior Men’s Championships in a row from 2001 to 2004. In 2001 they overcame Derry’s Lissan 22-9 in the All-Ireland Final, and in 2002 achieved a magnificent 18-1 victory in a Replay over Dublin’s Limekiln after a 10-10 draw in the Final. The following year they again won 14-5 on this occasion against The Heath of Laois, and achieved the four in a row in 2004 with another win over Limekiln, 17-13 in another close Final. The Rounders Association of Ireland was renamed the Rounders Council of Ireland in 2005.

About Rounders

Rounders is an Irish and British version of Softball and Baseball, and thought to be the ancestor of both. It was first codified in Ireland as part of the Original GAA Charter of 1884, but not organised until 1958. It is a Bat and Ball (also known as Safe Haven) sport whereby the batter attempts to hit a ball thrown at him or her by a pitcher or bowler and then attempts to run around the bases back home.

About

The Rounders Association of Ireland Senior Ladies All Ireland Championship in 2003 was dividedinto a Northern Section and a Southern Section, with Desertmartin of Co. Derry winning the Northern title and Bagenalstown of Co. Carlow the Southern title. Dublin’s Limekiln, based in Tymon Park, shocked Desertmartin in the Semi-Finals, but went on to lose the All Ireland Final to Bagenalstown.

About GAA Rounders

Rounders was included in the original Gaelic Athletic Association Charter in 1884 as one one of the four Gaelic Games – the others being Gaelic Football, Hurling, and Handball. It wasn’t until the 1950s, however, that any effort was made to organise the game, when the Erin’s Own Club in Antrim started a Rounders section and made efforts to promote the game throughout Ireland. The Senior Men’s All-Ireland Championship has been run since 1976, and is currently run on a Round-Robin League basis, with the top four reaching the Semi-Finals.

Christ Church went into bat first, Jodie Snelson scoring 19.5 rounders on her own, leaving Christ Church with a total score of 23 after the first innings. Rotherham Stars could only reply with 9 rounders. Rotherham made a brilliant turnaround, scoring 22.5 rounders on their second innings, before Christ Church came in to bat their second innings, needing only 9 rounders to win the game.
