Season Review

Luimneach (Limerick) won the 1935-36 National Hurling League title, having won all but one of their eight fixtures, the sole game blemishing their perfect record being a 3-3 (12 points) each tie with Tiobraid Árann (Tipperary) in Thurles in Round 5. The title was wrapped up in Limerick in Round 8 with a victory by 6-1 (19 points) to 1-2 (5 points) over Cill Chainnigh (Kilkenny), with their nearest challengers Corcaigh (Cork) narrowly defeated in the previous Round by 3-6 (15 points) to 4-2 (14 points).

Corcaigh took second place on the final day with a single point victory (3-4 to 3-3) over Gaillimh (Galway) to finish three points behind Luimneach on 12 points. Gaillimh took the third spot with 10 points. Átha Cliath (Dublin) finished fourth on 9 points, with victories over four of the five counties below them and a draw with Tiobraid Árann.

The bottom half of the League Table was filled by An Clár (Clare) on 8 points; Tiobraid Árann on 6 points; Cill Chainnigh on 6 points; Laoise (Laois) on 4 points; and Port Láirge (Waterford) on 2 points.

The title was Limerick’s third National Hurling League title in a row, having also won the 1933-34 and 1934-35 league titles. [References: S-1]

About the GAA and Hurling

Hurling is an ancient Gaelic Irish Sport, and one of the four Charter GAA Sports of 1884. It is played with a Hurl or Hurley (stick) and a sliotar (ball) and is one of the fastest team sports in the world. It is 15-a-side and Goals (worth 3 points) are scored as well as points (over the bar – worth one point). It is organised on a Club and County basis like most GAA Sports and has County, Provncial and All-Ireland Championships. Within both Club and County Championships there is the Hurling League (usually run over winter) and the Hurling Championship (usually run over summer). There are currently about 12 Top Level (Division 1) Counties that play for the Liam McCarthy Cup, as well as the Joe McDonagh Cup (Division 2), Christy Ring Cup (Division 3), and Nicky Rackard (Division 4) and Lory Meaghar Cups (Division 5). Outside of Ireland there are 14 Counties that also play Gaelic Football and sometimes Hurling, with London, Warwickshire and Lancashire taking part in the lower levels of the All-Ireland Championships. AIB All-Ireland Club SHC Semi-Finals

Galway’s St. Thomas’ lost out to Cúchullains Dun Láthaí of Antrim by 0-13 to 1-14 at Croke Park with the Dunloy team going forward to meet Ballyhale Shamrocks of Kilkenny who dethroned defending Champions Ballygunner of Waterford by a score of 1-16 to 0-16 in a gripping second Semi-Final. Goals by Keelan Molloy (Dunloy) and TJ Reid (Shamrocks) proved the big difference in each game. [References: 1-2]

AIB All-Ireland Club SHC Final

Ballyhale Shamrocks of County Kilkenny triumphed in the GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Club Championship Final by seven points over Cúchullains Dun Láthaí of County Antrim. A hard-earned first half lead of 1-9 to 1-7 was reduced to 1-13 to 1-12 following a Conal Cunning free, one of seven frees for the Antrim forward, but despite only a point separating the teams with nine minutes to go, Ballyhale finished the stronger, rattling off four scores in a row to make it 1-18 to 1-13, Eoin Cody leading the Kilkenny team’s scorers with 1-5. Again Cúchullains fought back, scoring two points to reduce the margin to 1-18 to 1-15 but a final flourish of four points sealed Ballyhale’s victory to add to their record medal haul in All-Ireland Club Championships. Report

Outside of the Myths and Legends associated with Ireland which mention Ancient Gaelic and Celtic Heroes such as Setanta and the extraordinary feats attributed to them, the earliest mention of Hurling in the record is in the Eighteenth Century, where it is commonly referred to in the newspapers as Hurley, Hurling, Caman and Shinty. [References: S-1 to S-2]

Even by this stage the differences between Hurley/Hurling, also known as Summer or Leinster Hurling or Iomáiníocht in Irish, and Camán or Camánaíocht in Irish, which was played across the Northern Half of the Island of Ireland, and Shinty or Camanachd in Scottish Gaelic, which was played primarily in the Scottish Highlands, was discernible from the reports. [References: S-1 to S-2]

In Iomáiníocht, the players could already at this stage run with the ball balanced on the end of a curved stick, whereas in both Camánaíocht and Camanachd players attempted to hit the ball from the ground. Camánaíocht died out in the Northern half of the country after Trinity College Dublin, which played that version of the sport switched to Hockey, and all other Camánaíocht clubs followed suit. [References: S-1 to S-2]

The matches were played until one team scored a goal, there being no points at the time, as goals were run through the goalline between posts made of a pliable stick planted at both ends in the ground, and bent over to create a arc through which the players tried to run with the ball on the stick. Teams were 20, 21, 12 or 100-a-side according to various reports. [References: S-1 to S-2]

The first mention of Inter-Provincial Hurling games are in 1747 when the last match of the season was advertised between Leinster and Munster for a spectator fee of 3d. Players often played for a winners pot. In 1748 there were two games arranged between Leinster and Munster at Crumlin Commons, spelt Crumblim in the newspapers of the time, in Co. Offaly. Matches were usually best-of-three and the first team to score in a game won that game. Leinster won both of those games in 1748 and therefore the series, while in 1749 a game between the two provinces ended due to fading light with neither side scoring. [References: S-1 to S-2]

A game in Urlingford, Co. Kilkenny was also played in 1768 and in 1792 in the Phoenix Park, Dublin a combined Connacht & Munster team played out a scoreless tie with Leinster. After 1800 the traditional games died out and the rise of Codified versions of the games appeared. [References: S-1 to S-2]

League Stage

Antrim and Kerry were to meet in the Joe McDonagh Cup Final two weeks after finishing the League Stage in a 0-29 to 2-21 victory for Kerry in the same fixture. The loss was Antrim’s first in the competition in 2022 and put Kerry over the line following Offaly’s shock 0-17 to 0-22 defeat to Carlow. With Kerry, Carlow and Offaly all finishing on six points, it was down to points difference to separate the counties. [References: 1-2]

ABOUT GAA HURLING

There are about 12 Top Level (Division 1) Counties that play for the Liam McCarthy Cup, as well as the Joe McDonagh Cup (Division 1B), Christy Ring Cup (Division 2), and Nicky Rackard (Division 3) and Lory Meaghar Cups (Division 4). Outside of Ireland there are 14 Counties that also play Gaelic Football and sometimes Hurling, with London, Warwickshire and Lancashire taking part in the lower levels of the All-Ireland Championships. The Christy Ring Cup is the Level 2 All-Ireland County Championship in Hurling, named after the great Cork player.

Report

The Big three – Kilkenny (36 wins), Cork (30) and Tipperary (28) between them account for 94 GAA All-Ireland Hurling Championship Final wins out of the 133 played since 1887. Kerry surprisingly holds the record for winning percentage in the All-Ireland Final with 100% although that Championship victory came in 1891. Antrim are the only county to have appeared in the Final without a victory, having lost two Finals. Munster Counties account for 74 Championship titles between them with Limerick (9), Clare (4) and Waterford (2) also winning Championships, meaning all six Munster counties have won the All-Ireland Final. Leinster has been the second most successful Province with Wexford and Dublin (6 wins each), Offaly (4) and Laois (1) also getting on the winners roll, all of them in the Southern half of the province. Galway are the only Connacht Champions with 5 wins, although London which is part of Britain GAA and competes in Connacht in the Gaelic Football Championship, won one Championship in 1901 out of the four All-Ireland Finals it played in when they took on the 32 Counties Champions for the All-Ireland title.
