GAA Football Championship Proposal 2050
The Eirball Proposal for the GAA Football Championship in 2050 is for a Championship Divided into two sections: All-Ireland and International-New Ireland. The All-Ireland Section keeps the traditional Provincial Championship format with the exception that Round-Robin Groups are played with the top two in each Province playing the the Provincial Final. In the case of Leinster and Ulster the Provinces are divided into two Groups with Group winners progressing to the Provincial Final. To further the development of Elite players and to reward them for their time and effort, the Inter-Provioncial Championships will become Professional, with the Inter-County Championship remaining Amateur. In the case of Dublin, a compromise has been introduced whereby Dublin is considered an Inter-Provincial Championship Professional side with four Counties (actually County-Boroughs to use their Official designation) – Dublin City, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal and South Dublin. The top two in the Dublin Provincial Championship play in the Dublin Provincial Final.
In the other section of the draw, Counties are divided into an International Section, comprising the Britain GAA Provincial Championship (divided into North and South Groups) and the World GAA Section (divided into Americas and Orient Groups); and a New Ireland Section, with Baronies and Districts divided into Gaeltacht GAA Provincial Championship and Irish Boroughs GAA Provincial Championsips. Each is the then sub-divided into Groups. The winners of the Gaeltacht GAA and Irish Boroughs Provincial Championsips then face each other in the New Ireland Final, the winners of which play the winners of the International Final (which is itself between the winners of the Britain GAA and World GAA Provincial Championships).
The Winners of the International-New Ireland Final play the winners of the All-Ireland Final for the World Championship Cup – there is precedence for such a Cup before in the early 1900s, 1950s and 1960s when the All-Ireland and National League winners played New York and London for titles such as the St, Brendan’s Cup (1954-1960) and the World Championship Cup (1967-1969). In addition, Britain, World, Gaeltacht and New Ireland Provincial teams would join in the Inter-Provincial Championship. Such hallowed GAA concepts such as the amateur status of Inter-County Football and the unbalanced approach to the Provincial Championships has been kept. A Total of 72 Counties, Boroughs, Districts, Baronies and Regions will be playing Inter-County Football, with 35 in the All-Ireland Section and 37 in the International-New Ireland Section. The Tailteann Cup, introduced for weaker Counties in 2022, shall become a Championship for Counties eliminated prior to the Provincial Finals, with “C” and “D” Championships also played for Counties in the lower half of the Round-Robin Tables.
