Report

Naas bridged a 17-year gap in finally winning the Senior Hurling Championship with a 0-15 to 0-12 win over Coill Dubh in St. Conleth’s. Coill Dubh were disappointed with their performance in the Final, missing 12 scoring opportunities, including two goal chances. Naas led 0-9 to 0-5 at the half, and scored most of their first half points from frees – only Shane Ryan & Brian Byrne scored from play, whereas Coill Dubh scored 4 of their five points from play. Coill Dubh never changed their tactic of sending long balls directly into the forwards, and this was read easily and lapped-up by Naas in the first half. Naas were more settled in this game, and were assured throughout the game. They won by 3 points in the end.

Report

Meath won the GAA Hurling Christy Ring Cup (Division 2 All Ireland) in 2016, by a point over Antrim after a replay. They had earlier beaten Wicklow, London and Kildare. In all, eight counties were eligible for the Christy Ring Cup, Meath. Kildare and Wicklow (Leinster), Antrim, Derry, Down (Ulster), Roscommon (Connacht) and London (Britain). Meath fell 1-7 to 0-1 behind after only 19 minutes, but a dramatic late comeback, spearheaded by substitute Sean Quigley, who only came on in the 64th minute, saw Meath claim a first ever Christy Ring Cup by a point (2-18 to 1-20), or so it seemed, as the score was later shown to be erroneuous, and aReplay needed, this time Meath winning by a point (4-21 to 5-17). Stephen Clynch hit the last-minute point from a free in extra-time in the replay, in what turned out to be a nine-goal thriller.

About

The Christy Ring Cup is the Tier 2 All-Ireland County Championship in Hurling, named after the great Cork player.

From its inception to 2018 it was a Double-Elimination Cup (dubbed the “Back Door” by the Press) and in 2019 was changed to two groups of 4, playing a Single Round-Robin with Semi-Finals & Final.

About GAA Rounders

Rounders was included in the original Gaelic Athletic Association Charter in 1884 as one one of the four Gaelic Games – the others being Gaelic Football, Hurling, and Handball. It wasn’t until the 1950s, however, that any effort was made to organise the game, when the Erin’s Own Club in Antrim started a Rounders section and made efforts to promote the game throughout Ireland. The Senior Men’s All-Ireland Championship has been run since 1976, and is currently run on a Round-Robin League basis, with the top four reaching the Semi-Finals.

The Senior Mixed All-Ireland Championship has been run since 1990, and currently is run on a Round-Robin League basis, with the top four reaching the Semi-Finals.

About GAA Poc Fada

An Poc Fada – ‘the Long Puck’ is a Gaelic Game where players use a Hurley to hit a Sliotar (ball) up the side of a mountain and down the other side in as few pucks or shots as possible.

The sport would have a similar origin to the Scottish Game of Golf. It is mentioned in the myths and legends of Ireland, when Setanta took his Hurley / Hurl and hit his Sliotar all the way from Co Louth to Co. Armagh in one go. The All-Ireland Poc Fada Championships have taken place in the Cooley Mountains in Co. Louth since 1961 in commemoration of the legendary feat.

Kirkwall Ba’ Game (Orkney Uppies and Doonies)

About

The Orkney Ba’ game is played on Christmas Day and New Years’ Day each year in Kirkwall, Orkney Islands, in the North sea off Scotland. It is a Medieval Football game played with a Ba’ (Ball made of cork and covered with leather). two opposing sides, the Uppies and Doonies (those born to the North of the Cathedral are Doonies and those born to the South of the Cathedral are Uppies).

The Uppie goal is to touch the Ba’ against a wall in the South end of the town. The Doonies have to get the ball into the water of Krkwall Bay to the North of the town. There are no official rules or limit to the number of players on each side although “inappropriate behaviour” is kept in check.

Usually a tight scrum develops around the Ba’ but when the scrum breaks chaos erupts as the team with possession tries to get to their goal as fast as they can. A game can last up to five hours, although there is only one goal scored and the game is up.
