About GAA Allianz Football League

The GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) has its own brand of Football: Gaelic Football or simply GAA Football, in Ireland, played with 15 players per team, and goals worth three points and over-the-bar (points) worth one point (The goals are similar to Rugby but there is a Goalkeeper to prevent goals). It is like a cross between Soccer and Rugby, with players allowed handle the ball, but may not pick it up off the ground without the aid of their feet, and limited running with the ball [4-5].

The GAA Allianz Football League is the curtain-raiser to the Inter-County season, the Elite players representing their Counties as well as Clubs. It usually takes places in the first half of the GAA Inter-County season, from late January until the beginning of April when the Division finals are played. There are four Divisions, with promotion and relegation between the Divisions as in Soccer.

About the Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta na bhFear Sinsear (Senior Men) 2022

The Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta was inaugurated in 1969 as the Gaelic Football Championship for the winners of each of the seven Gaeltacht Area Championships in Ireland. There are two grades in each of the Men’s and Women’s competitions: Sinsear (Senior – literally Ancestors) and Sóisear (Junior) representing two tiers of Adult Football (rather like Major and Minor in American Sports) rather than age grades. It is hosted over a weekend in a different location in the Gaeltacht Areas each year. The Host GAA Club and the Holders also gain entry along with the Champions of the seven Gaeltacht Area Championships.

ABOUT the GAA Football Senior Championship

The GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) has its own brand of Football: Gaelic Football or simply GAA Football, in Ireland, played with 15 players per team, and goals worth three points and over-the-bar (points) worth one point (The goals are similar to Rugby but there is a Goalkeeper to prevent goals). It is like a cross between Soccer and Rugby, with players allowed handle the ball, but may not pick it up off the ground without the aid of their feet, and limited running with the ball [References 5-6].

The GAA All-Ireland Senior Football Championship is the pinnacle to the Inter-County and GAA Football seasons, the Elite players representing their Counties as well as Clubs. It usually takes places in the second half of the GAA Inter-County season, from early April until the September when the All-Ireland finals are played. The format is increasingly complex each year, with the traditional four Provincial Championships preceeding the All-Ireland Championship. [References: 5-8]

Format

There is since 2001 a “Back Door” or Double Elimination system in place whereby Counties defeated prior to the Provincial Finals can re-enter the draw via the All-Ireland Qualifiers, from which four Qualifiers meet the Four Provincial Champions in the All-Ireland Quarter-Finals. From the All-Ireland Quarter-Finals onwards there is Single Elimination (Straight Knockout) in place to decide the All-Ireland Champions and the winners of the Sam McGuire Cup. [References: 4, 8]

From 2022 the Tailteann Cup has been introduced, whereby Counties from Roinn’s 3 and 4 exclusively in the GAA National Football Leagues (Divisions 3 and 4) can compete for a “Division 2” Championship and have the realistic chance of winning an All-Ireland Championship. Counties which reach their Provincial Final are excluded from the Tailteann Cup. [References: 4, 8]

CLG Connacht / Connacht GAA SFC 1999 Recap

The 1999 Connacht GAA Senior Football Championship was fairly predictable with Mayo, Roscommon and Galway winning through the First Round as expected versus New York, Leitrim and London respectively. Mayo had over double the score of Roscommon in Castlebar in the Semi-Finals (0-21 to 0-10) while Sligo put three goals past Galway in the other Semi-Final, but Galway still managed a draw before winning the replay by a wide margin in Tuam. The Final, also in Tuam was a closer affair than any match previously bar the Semi-Final draw, with Mayo winning out 1-14 to 1-10 to go on to the All-Ireland Semi-Finals. [References: 2]

CLG Laighean / Leinster GAA SFC 1999 Recap

A four-county Preliminary Round qualified Westmeath to meet Laois in the Provincial Quarter-Finals at the expense of Longford, Carlow and Wexford. There Westmeath lost 1-8 to 1-16 at Croke Park in a double-header with Offaly triumphing 0-11 to 0-7 over Kildare in the other fixture. The Previous weekend another double-header, again at Croke Park, saw Meath easily dispose of Wicklow 2-10 to 0-6 and Dublin defeat Louth 2-15 to 0-14. Meath continued their fine form in the Semi-Finals, winning 1-13 to 0-9 versus Offaly, while Dublin knocked out Laois 0-16 to 1-11, but needed a Replay in order to do so. In the Provincial Final Meath triumphed 1-14 to 0-12 over the Dubs, with Ollie Murphy contributing 1-5 to the Royal County’s total, and Trevor Giles adding another 0-5. [References: S-2]

CLG Mumha / Munster GAA SFC 1999 Recap

Cork amassed a total of 9 goals and 46 points (73 aggregate) on their way to winning the Munster GAA Senior Football Championship in 1999. After defeating Waterford by an amazing 28 points in the First Round, the Leesiders then knocked out Limerick by 16 points in the Semi-Final before triumphing 2-10 to 2-4 over Kerry in the Final. Kerry had eliminated Tipperary in the First Round and Clare in the Semi-Finals. [References: S-2]

CLG Uladh / Ulster GAA SFC 1999 Recap

After Fermanagh knocked out Monaghan in the Preliminary Round, the Quarter-Finals produced two Replays: Armagh defeated Donegal in one by 2-11 to 0-12, and Derry had a more comprehensive victory over Cavan by a score of 2-14 to 0-5 in the other. In the other two Quarter-Finals Down won by a goal and a point versus Antrim and Tyrone more than doubled Fermanagh’s total in two games featuring neighbouring rivals. The Semi-Finals were both close with Armagh defeating Derry by a point and Down winning by 2-14 to 0-15 over Tyrone. The Ulster Final saw Armagh score three goals to progress to the All-Ireland Semi-Finals with a 3-12 to 0-10 defeat of next door Down. [References: S-2]

CLG Cluichí Ceannais Peile na hÉireann / GAA All-Ireland SFC 1999 Recap
