ABOUT Ulster GAA FOOTBALL SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

The GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) has its own brand of Football: Gaelic Football or simply GAA Football, in Ireland, played with 15 players per team, and goals worth three points and over-the-bar (points) worth one point (The goals are similar to Rugby but there is a Goalkeeper to prevent goals). It is like a cross between Soccer and Rugby, with players allowed handle the ball, but may not pick it up off the ground without the aid of their feet, and limited running with the ball [References 5-6].

The GAA All-Ireland Senior Football Championship is the pinnacle to the Inter-County and GAA Football seasons, the Elite players representing their Counties as well as Clubs. It usually takes places in the second half of the GAA Inter-County season, from early April until the September when the All-Ireland finals are played. The format is increasingly complex each year, with the traditional four Provincial Championships preceeding the All-Ireland Championship. [References: 5-8]

FORMAT

There is since 2001 a “Back Door” or Double Elimination system in place whereby Counties defeated prior to the Provincial Finals can re-enter the draw via the All-Ireland Qualifiers, from which four Qualifiers meet the Four Provincial Champions in the All-Ireland Quarter-Finals. From the All-Ireland Quarter-Finals onwards there is Single Elimination (Straight Knockout) in place to decide the All-Ireland Champions and the winners of the Sam McGuire Cup. [References: 4, 8]

From 2022 the Tailteann Cup has been introduced, whereby Counties from Roinn’s 3 and 4 exclusively in the GAA National Football Leagues (Divisions 3 and 4) can compete for a “Division 2” Championship and have the realistic chance of winning an All-Ireland Championship. Counties which reach their Provincial Final are excluded from the Tailteann Cup. [References: 4, 8]

Round by Round Reports

Quarter-Finals

Leitrim were made to battle all the way by London after twice going five points ahead, early in the first half through a goal from Ryan O’Rourke and then again early in the second half through. Even though London had fought back to within a point at halftime, the visitors went eight points up early in the second after Donal Wrynn scored Letrim’s third goal. The game looked dead and buried for London at the time, but a gallant comeback was on the cards after two quick goals in succession from Seán Hickey and Fearghal McMahon. The Exiles were just a point down going into injury time with Even Sweeney’s black card compunding the visitiors woes. London were frustrated in the run-in however, with few chances and Leitrim had the last word when O’Rourke got his second goal as Leitrim won by four points in the end. [References: 4]

Sligo won 1-16 to 0-15 points versus New York, but were made to battle all the way. Galway defeated Mayo by a single point (1-14 to 0-16) [References: 2-3]

Semi-Finals

Roscommon defeated Sligo with ease 0-23 to 0-12 and Galway had an even easier victory over Leitrim by 4-20 to 0-9. [References: 2-3]

Final

Galway gained revenge for defeat to Roscommon in the Allianz Football League Division 2 Final, by triumphing over the Rossies by 2-19 to 2-16 in the Connacht GAA Football Senior Championship Final. The margin over victory and total points scored being identical (25 to 22) in both finals. [References: 2-3]

Round 1 Recap

Limerick got off to a winning start with a 7 point victory over Louth (4-9 to 1-11) in a Shannonside fixture in the GAA Allianz Football League Roinn 3 in 2022. Joining them on 2 points after the first Round were Westmeath who had a five point win over Wicklow (1-16 to 2-8) and Laois who triumphed by 5 points also (3-9 to 1-10) in two All-Leinster clashes. The other fixture in Round 1 pitted Fermanagh and Antrim together in an All-Ulster affair, with Antrim prevailing by 9 points (1-14 to 0-8) to go top of the table. Round 1 References: 2-4]

Round 2 Recap

Limerick and Westmeath gained their second wins of the campaign with victories over Antrim (2-9 to 0-11) and Laois (2-11 to 0-11) respectively leaving Antrim and Laois in third and fourth on two points each. The remaing four counties all drew, Longford (0-9) and Louth (1-6) in a low-scoring affair and Wicklow (1-10) and Fermanagh (2-7) also gaining their first points of the season. References: 2-4]

Round 3 Recap

With two games postponed (Fermanagh v Laois and Westmeath v Longford) Antrim took the opportunity to join Westmeath and Limerick on four points at the top of the table with a 2-10 to 1-7 defeat of Wicklow. Limerick’s loss to Louth by two points (1-12 to 1-14) meant they missed the opportunity to go two points clear at the top, and meant Louth got in touch with the leaders on three points. Reference: [2-4]

Round 4 Recap

Limerick took over sole possession of first place with a 1-13 to 1-9 defeat of Wicklow, leaving Wicklow in last place on one point. Antrim could only draw with Laois (1-8 each) as they fell a point behind Limerick on five points. Louth moved into joint second on points with Antrim after a 1-15 to 1-13 victory over Westmeath, which left the Leinster Midland county on four points, one above both Laois and Fermanagh, with the Ulster county gaining a seven point (3-11 to 0-13) win over Longford, who like Wicklow were fighting relegation on one point. Reference: [2-4]

Round 3 Rescheduled Recap

In two rescheduled games from Round 3, Longford shocked Westmeath, gaining their first win of the season against their fellow North Leinstermen, by a score of 0-14 to 0-10. The win put them level on points with Laois after the Portlaoise-based county lost by six points to Fermanagh, who moved up to five points, just a point behind Roinn 3 leaders Limerick. Reference: [2-4]

Round 5 Recap

Six counties were still in contention after round 5, with Antrim leading the way on seven points following a 1-19 to 0-12 defeat of Longford, who were now all but out of the running on three points. Louth joined Antrim on seven points with a 2-12 to 0-14 win at Fermanagh who remained on five points. Westmeath and Limerick were both on six points following Westmeath’s six point win (1-12 to 1-6) over the Treaty County and fellow Shannonsiders. Laois also got into contention with a 1-17 to 0-8 win at Wicklow who remained last on one point. Reference: [2-4]

Round 6 Recap

Roinn 3 was still very open after Round 6 with Louth in first place after a 1-15 to 1-11 defeat of Antrim in a clash of the top two counties. The other three games were extremely close with one point wins for Limerick and Wicklow over Laois and Longford respectively. Limerick’s victory put them in second place on eight points while Wicklow’s victory over Longford saw them move above the midlanders into seventh, with both counties on three points. Laois’s loss dropped them from contention. Meanwhile a draw between Fermanagh and Westmeath left the two counties in mid-table with an outside shot going into the Final Round. [References: 2-4]

Round 7 Recap

Louth defeated Wicklow by seven points to finish top of the league stage in Roinn 3, with Limerick joining the wee county in the Final after a five point win over Fermanagh. Westmeath took third ahead of Antrim after defeating the men from the Glens by five points to finish on nine points, one behind Limerick and two ahead of Antrim. In an important relegation battle Longford defeated Laois by the seven points to finish above the Queen’s County on head-to-head. Wicklow finished last and were relegated [References: 2-4]

Final Recap

Louth won the GAA Allianz Football League Roinn 3 Final with a 1-14 to 0-12 defeat of Limerick. [Results and Fixtures References: 2-4]

ABOUT GAA ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) has its own brand of Football: Gaelic Football or simply GAA Football, in Ireland, played with 15 players per team, and goals worth three points and over-the-bar (points) worth one point (The goals are similar to Rugby but there is a Goalkeeper to prevent goals). It is like a cross between Soccer and Rugby, with players allowed handle the ball, but may not pick it up off the ground without the aid of their feet, and limited running with the ball [4-5].

The GAA Allianz Football League is the curtain-raiser to the Inter-County season, the Elite players representing their Counties as well as Clubs. It usually takes places in the first half of the GAA Inter-County season, from late January until the beginning of April when the Division finals are played. There are four Divisions, with promotion and relegation between the Divisions as in Soccer.

Round by Round Recaps

Round 1 Recap

With the start of the GAA Allianz Football League in 2022 coinciding with the lifting of restrictions on gatherings, the return of spectators to GAA games was welcome. Armagh scored a shock 2-15 (21 Points) to 1-13 (16 Points) victory over Dublin on Saturday the 29th of January in the opening fixture. Sunday’s fixtures saw three draws with Kerry scoring the only goal in atrocious weather: Kildare 0-13 Kerry 1-10; Mayo 0-11 Donegal 0-11 and Tyrone 0-9 Monaghan 0-9. The Results left Armagh in top position after Round 1 with Dublin surprisingly being the only team left pointless [Round 1 References: 2-4].

Round 2 Recap

Armagh moved to the top of Roinn 1 with a 2-14 to 0-14 (20 points to 14) defeat of Ulster rivals Tyrone on Sunday the 6th of February. Kerry consigned Dublin to their second loss in two games with a 1-15 (18 points) to 0-11 (11 points) win which put Kerry in second place behind Armagh on 3 points. Joining the Kingdom on 3 points were Donegal (2-11 to 1-9 winners over Kildare) and Mayo (2-10 to 1-11 victors against Monaghan). The losses left Kildare, Monaghan and Tyrone on 1 point each [Round 2 References: 2-4].

Round 3 Recap

Kerry went top of the table on points difference after defeating Donegal 1-13 to 0-7, and were joined on five points by Armagh who drew with Monaghan (1-7 to 0-10) and Mayo who had an excellent win against struggling Dublin (2-11 to 0-12). The loss left Dublin rooted to the bottom of the table on no points, having lost all three games so far. The fourth game saw Tyrone win 2-7 to 0-12 against Kildare, leaving Kildare in second last on one point and moving Tyrone up to fifth, level on three points with fourth placed Donegal. [Reference: 2-4]

Round 4 Recap

Dublin suffered their fourth defeat in four games when going down 0-12 to 1-12 to Kildare, which put Kildare back in the reckoning on three points. Kerry stayed top with a big win over Monaghan (3-14 to 1-12), putting them on seven points, along with Mayo, who had a narrow two point victory over Armagh (0-15 to 1-12), who suffered their first loss of the campaign. Joining Armagh on five points were Donegal who had a 2-10 to 0-12 victory over Tyrone, who remained on three points alongside Kildare, one above Ulster rivals Monaghan. Reference: 2-4]

Round 5 Recap

Dublin finally got off the mark with a 0-13 to 0-8 defeat of Tyrone, although the Dubs are still in last place in Roinn 1 despite the win, with Tyrone one place and one point above them. Kerry took top spot with a 1-12 to 0-14 defeat of Mayo, a single point victory enough to move the Kingdom to nine points, two above second placed Mayo. Armagh joined Mayo on seven points with a 1-12 to 0-10 win, leaving the Lillywhites on three points and in relegation trouble. Monaghan moved above both Tyrone and Kildare to four points with a 1-12 to 0-10 win at fellow Ulstermen and North West rivals Donegal. The loss left Donegal on five points. Reference: [2-4]

Round 6 Recap

Kerry were unassailable at the top of Roinn 1 on 11 points, four ahead of nearest challengers Mayo and Armagh, after a close win over Armagh with a single goal the difference between the counties. Mayo’s loss to Tyrone in a low-scoring encounter (0-9 to 0-11) brought Tryone out of the relegation places on five points, one ahead of a resurgent Dublin, who defeated Donegal by 2-15 to 2-11. Kildare also climbed to five points to level with Ulster counties Tyrone and Donegal with a big 0-24 to 1-12 win over Monaghan, consigning the North West county to the bottom spot with one round to go. Round 7 Recap

Kerry and Mayo were due to meet in the GAA Allianz Football League Roinn 1 Final after Kerry finished top on 13 points with a win over Tyrone and Mayo defeated Kildare by eight points to finish second on nine points. Mayo’s closest rivals for second, Armagh, lost by a single point away to Donegal in an Ulster match-up as both counties finished on seven points. Monaghan defeated Dublin by a single point also, 3-13 to 1-18, as the Metropolitans were relegated in last place on four points. Kildare joined them in being relegated to Roinn 2 in a bad day for Leinster counties, as they lost out on head-to-head versus Tyrone after both finished on five points. Monaghan’s victory saw the Ulster county leapfrog over all three other counties in the bottom half of the table to finish on six points. References: [2-4]

Final Recap

Mayo lost yet another Final, and Kerry won yet another, by 3-19 to 0-13, more than doubling Mayo’s tally, as the Kingdom took the GAA Allianz Football League Roinn 1 title for 2022. [Results and Tables References: 4]

Report

Meath (1967), Down (1968) and Kerry (1969) won the GAA World Championship Cup in Gaelic Football, which was played between the All-Ireland Champions and New York in the late-1960s.

About The GAA World Championship Cup

New York played the All-Ireland Champions at Hurling and Gaelic Football for the World Championship Cup from 1967 to 1969. They now play in the All-Ireland Championship itself, and the other World Counties (United States, Canada, Australasia, Europe, Asia and Middle East) play in the GAA World Games, which is like a Provincial Championship for the World Counties.

Report

Quarter-Final

Dunedin Connollys 2-6 Naomh Colmcille 1-10

A free-kick near the end of the match from Daniel Clarke proved the difference for Naomh Colmcille as the the Donegal side narrowly defeated their Scottish counterparts in Edinburgh. Dunedin scored first through Damien Keane and led by 0-4 to 0-3 at half-time. Soon after the second half began Naomh Colmcille went ahead through a goal by Ryan McErlean, however Connollys answered immediately with a goal of their own to tie the game. The lead changed frequently after this as the sides traded score-for-score towards the end of the match. With two minutes remaining Dunedin netted their second goal to once again level the match, however Clarke’s free kick was enough to separate the sides.

Semi-Final

Knocknagree 2-9 Naomh Colmcille 0-7

Two soft goals early on for Knocknagree settled this semi-final. James Dennehy and Anthony Connor netted with a bit of fortune and poor defending from Donegal side. The Cork side went into half-time leading 2-4 to 0-3 and while the second-half was more even Naomh Colmcille never found a way back into the game. Naomh colmcille ended up with 13 men as Knocknagree eased to victory.

Final

Knocknagree 3-13 Multyfarnham 3-9

Knockragee won their first All-Ireland Junior Football Championship, and Cork’s first since 2008, in a high-scoring Final at Croke Park. Six goals were scored in total, three for each side, as Knockragee scored all of their 3-13 tally from play. Both sides are small clubs who haven’t known glory like this before: Multyfarnham’s Westmeath JFC title was their first title of note since the 1950s and Knocknagree’s greatest achievement to date was their Munster Junior Final earlier this season. Man-of-the-match Fintan O’Connor scored the opening goal midway through the first have for the Cork side, and Michael Mahony added one 40 seconds later. At half-time the score was 2-7 to 0-5 in favour of Knocknagree, however, the scoring was only beginning to light up the scoreboard. Knocknagree reverted to six defenders with their lead, but that only served to encourage the Multyfarnham forwards, who scored a goal of their own through David Wallace. Knockragee scored a lucky goal from goalkeeper Patrick Doyle’s 45, to stretch their lead again. Two stoppage-time goals from Mark Fallon, weren’t enough for the westmeath side to level matters, and the title, Knockragee’s first at All-Ireland level, went to the Cork side.
