GAA Football Championship Proposal 2050

The Eirball Proposal for the GAA Football Championship in 2050 is for a Championship Divided into two sections: All-Ireland and International-New Ireland. The All-Ireland Section keeps the traditional Provincial Championship format with the exception that Round-Robin Groups are played with the top two in each Province playing the the Provincial Final. In the case of Leinster and Ulster the Provinces are divided into two Groups with Group winners progressing to the Provincial Final. To further the development of Elite players and to reward them for their time and effort, the Inter-Provioncial Championships will become Professional, with the Inter-County Championship remaining Amateur. In the case of Dublin, a compromise has been introduced whereby Dublin is considered an Inter-Provincial Championship Professional side with four Counties (actually County-Boroughs to use their Official designation) – Dublin City, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal and South Dublin. The top two in the Dublin Provincial Championship play in the Dublin Provincial Final.

In the other section of the draw, Counties are divided into an International Section, comprising the Britain GAA Provincial Championship (divided into North and South Groups) and the World GAA Section (divided into Americas and Orient Groups); and a New Ireland Section, with Baronies and Districts divided into Gaeltacht GAA Provincial Championship and Irish Boroughs GAA Provincial Championsips. Each is the then sub-divided into Groups. The winners of the Gaeltacht GAA and Irish Boroughs Provincial Championsips then face each other in the New Ireland Final, the winners of which play the winners of the International Final (which is itself between the winners of the Britain GAA and World GAA Provincial Championships).

The Winners of the International-New Ireland Final play the winners of the All-Ireland Final for the World Championship Cup – there is precedence for such a Cup before in the early 1900s, 1950s and 1960s when the All-Ireland and National League winners played New York and London for titles such as the St, Brendan’s Cup (1954-1960) and the World Championship Cup (1967-1969). In addition, Britain, World, Gaeltacht and New Ireland Provincial teams would join in the Inter-Provincial Championship. Such hallowed GAA concepts such as the amateur status of Inter-County Football and the unbalanced approach to the Provincial Championships has been kept. A Total of 72 Counties, Boroughs, Districts, Baronies and Regions will be playing Inter-County Football, with 35 in the All-Ireland Section and 37 in the International-New Ireland Section. The Tailteann Cup, introduced for weaker Counties in 2022, shall become a Championship for Counties eliminated prior to the Provincial Finals, with “C” and “D” Championships also played for Counties in the lower half of the Round-Robin Tables.

ABOUT Ulster GAA FOOTBALL SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

The GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) has its own brand of Football: Gaelic Football or simply GAA Football, in Ireland, played with 15 players per team, and goals worth three points and over-the-bar (points) worth one point (The goals are similar to Rugby but there is a Goalkeeper to prevent goals). It is like a cross between Soccer and Rugby, with players allowed handle the ball, but may not pick it up off the ground without the aid of their feet, and limited running with the ball [References 5-6].

The GAA All-Ireland Senior Football Championship is the pinnacle to the Inter-County and GAA Football seasons, the Elite players representing their Counties as well as Clubs. It usually takes places in the second half of the GAA Inter-County season, from early April until the September when the All-Ireland finals are played. The format is increasingly complex each year, with the traditional four Provincial Championships preceeding the All-Ireland Championship. [References: 5-8]

FORMAT

There is since 2001 a “Back Door” or Double Elimination system in place whereby Counties defeated prior to the Provincial Finals can re-enter the draw via the All-Ireland Qualifiers, from which four Qualifiers meet the Four Provincial Champions in the All-Ireland Quarter-Finals. From the All-Ireland Quarter-Finals onwards there is Single Elimination (Straight Knockout) in place to decide the All-Ireland Champions and the winners of the Sam McGuire Cup. [References: 4, 8]

From 2022 the Tailteann Cup has been introduced, whereby Counties from Roinn’s 3 and 4 exclusively in the GAA National Football Leagues (Divisions 3 and 4) can compete for a “Division 2” Championship and have the realistic chance of winning an All-Ireland Championship. Counties which reach their Provincial Final are excluded from the Tailteann Cup. [References: 4, 8]

Round by Round Reports

Quarter-Finals

Leitrim were made to battle all the way by London after twice going five points ahead, early in the first half through a goal from Ryan O’Rourke and then again early in the second half through. Even though London had fought back to within a point at halftime, the visitors went eight points up early in the second after Donal Wrynn scored Letrim’s third goal. The game looked dead and buried for London at the time, but a gallant comeback was on the cards after two quick goals in succession from Seán Hickey and Fearghal McMahon. The Exiles were just a point down going into injury time with Even Sweeney’s black card compunding the visitiors woes. London were frustrated in the run-in however, with few chances and Leitrim had the last word when O’Rourke got his second goal as Leitrim won by four points in the end. [References: 4]

Sligo won 1-16 to 0-15 points versus New York, but were made to battle all the way. Galway defeated Mayo by a single point (1-14 to 0-16) [References: 2-3]

Semi-Finals

Roscommon defeated Sligo with ease 0-23 to 0-12 and Galway had an even easier victory over Leitrim by 4-20 to 0-9. [References: 2-3]

Final

Galway gained revenge for defeat to Roscommon in the Allianz Football League Division 2 Final, by triumphing over the Rossies by 2-19 to 2-16 in the Connacht GAA Football Senior Championship Final. The margin over victory and total points scored being identical (25 to 22) in both finals. [References: 2-3]

Round by Round Report

Round 1

Scotland got off to a good start, defeating Gloucestershire by 0-13 to 0-12 in Group A, while London beat Warwickshire by six points (3-14 to 3-8). In Group B Lancashire thrashed Yorkshire by 33 points, 6-20 to 0-5. [References: 2]

Round 2

London stamped their authority on Group A by inflicting a heavy defeat on the other county team to have won in Round 1, Scotland – London won by 6-8 to 0-3. The other game in Group A saw Warwickshire win by 2-19 to 0-16 over Gloucestershire, meaning barring a miracle London go through to the Semi-Finals to meet the winners of Group B, along with Scotland and Warwickshire who would most likely meet in the other Semi-Final. The Group B match between Hertfordshire and Lancashire was abandoned due to a medical incident. [References: 2]

Round 3

In Group A London made sure of the Group A title with a 4-12 to 1-7 defeat of Gloucestershire and Warwickshire and Scotland played to a 3-12 to 1-8 victory for Warwickshire knowing the two Counties would meet again in the Semi-Finals. Group B was wide open after Hertfordshire defeated Yorkshire by 6-18 to 0-8 eliminating Yorkshire and meaning the refixture between Hertfordshire and Lancashire set for Watford on the 15th May would decide who would go through to the Semi-Finals to meet London. [References: 2]

Refixture

With Lancashire defeating Hertfordshire by 3-15 to 2-6 the Home Counties side reached the All Britain Intercounty Football Championship Semi-Finals to meet London [References: 2-4]

Proposal for GAA All-Ireland Championships 2040

There has been much talk about giving Inter-County Gaelic Football players more games to play in the All-Ireland Football Championship, given that they train all year round for their Championship season to end after just one (or now two) games if they are eliminated early.

The Eirball proposal is to create Group Stages first, but keep the Provincial Championship set-up. Each Provincial Championship could be divided into groups of three, playing two games each, with the winners of each group progressing to the next round. The group second and third place enter the Tailteann Cup.

For this to work smoothly, New York must go into Connacht (bringing Connacht up to six counties) and London, Warwickshire and Lancashire go into Ulster (but playing in a group of their own initially), bringing Ulster up to 12 counties.

Following further Provincial Finals (and Semi-Finals in the case of Ulster and Leinster) the All-Ireland Series features the traditional four provincial champions. Likewise the Tailteann cup is based on further provincial knockout rounds before the All-Ireland Series.

In time the Provincial Championship Groups can become six county groups (just one each in Connacht and Munster and two each in Leinster and Ulster) with the group winners and runners-up progressing to Provincial semi-finals and finals.

World Games (B Championship) 2040

The World Games (B Championship) shall consist of the remaining Britain, American and World counties along with the playing 3 group based championship based initially within each GAA “Province” outside of Ireland and the 32 traditional counties. The four provincial winners then meet for the B Championship Finals series. For the purposes of this Championship, Brittany and Galicia have been granted their own GAA County status and are in the Britain Provincial Championship.

GAA Development Championship 2040

For the purposes of promoting the GAA in non-traditional areas, the GAA Elevens and Sevens have been set-up, with Eirball proposing an All-Ireland Championshiop featuring the seven Gaeltacht Areas, the six new Super Districts in Northern Ireland, Four County Boroughs and City Boroughs in Dublin, and the four City Boroughs in the South & West. Each of these four Areas shall play a “Provincial Championship” of six games each (five in the case of Northern Ireland) and then the winners shall play in the All-Ireland Series. Clogher Valley could be brought in as a seventh Super District in Northern Ireland to give each Area six games each.

Galway are All-Ireland Senior Hurling Champions 1987.

All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship and B Championship Overview 1987

The 1987 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship (SHC) was a marathon for its time, beginning on May 3 with a Senior B Hurling Championship Preliminary Round game between Meath and Kildare and concluding on September 6 with Galway’s triumph in the All-Ireland Final.

In between Carlow won the All-Ireland Senior B Home Championship; London won both the British Provincial Championship and All-Ireland Senior B Championship; Tipperary the Munster Senior Hurling Championship (having to win both Semi-Final and Final on Replays); and Kilkenny won the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship. With the Senior and Senior B Championships inter-locked through the Senior B Champions qualifying to meet Antrim in the All-Ireland Quarter-Finals, it was a long and tricky path for any potential All-Ireland Champion. [References: 1-23]

All-Ireland SHC B Home Championship RECAP

Carlow defeated Down by a single point in the GAA All-Ireland Senior Hurling B Home Championship Final at Trim on 21st June 1987 and would go on to take on London for the All-Ireland Senior Hurling B Championship and the right to play Antrim in the GAA All-Ireland Senior Championship. [References: B 8]

The SHC B Home Championship had started with a preliminary game in Newbridge in early May where Meath easily defeated host Kildare by 2-13 to 0-6 [References: B 1]. The First Round games later on in May were hit by the withdrawal of Mayo, who with only 45-50 Hurling players in the county and a large amount of injuries could not take the pitch at Aughrim versus Wicklow who received a walkover to meet Carlow in the Semi-Finals [References: B 2] . Carlow had knocked out Meath by five points in Round 1, winning by 3-17 to 4-9, in a high-scoring encounter [References: B 3-5]. The other Semi-Final was to be contested between Roscommon, who had little trouble defeating Armagh; and Down, who had a lucky escape against Derry, needing a replay after a last minute equaliser against the Oak Leaf county in the first match [References: B 4-5].

The Semi-Finals saw Down step up against Roscommon, winning 2-19 to 1-5, while Carlow were made to work against Wicklow, prevailing 1-13 to 0-12 [References: B 6-7] . The Home Final, played in Trim, saw Carlow again winning narrowly, this time by just a point as they triumphed by 1-15 to 1-14 versus Down, and would go on to meet British Provincial Champions London in the All-Ireland SHC B Final. [References: B 8]

British Provincial SHC B Final RECAP

London were made to fight hard to defeat Hertfordshire by just two points at the Hertfordshire home in Watford in the GAA British Provincial SHC B Senior Hurling Championship on 24th May 1987. With the victory London went on to meet Carlow, the All-Ireland SHC B Home Champions, in the All-Ireland SHC B Senior Hurling B Championship decider for a shot at playing Antrim in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Quarter-Finals. [Reference: B 8-9]

Leinster SHC Recap

The 1987 Leinster GAA Senior Hurling Championship (SHC) was won by Kilkenny after a “brilliant comeback” in the final versus Offaly [Reference: 5]. The Cats were not extended in earlier rounds when defeating Westmeath by 15 points and Wexford by eight [References: 2-3, 10]. Offaly had disposed of Dublin (eight point margin) and Laois (six point margin) to set up the finale [References: 1, 4, 10]. The Cats went on to meet Ulster representatives Antrim in the All-Ireland Semi-Finals. [References: 5]

Munster SHC Recap

Tipperary won the Munster GAA Senior Hurling Championship (SHC) for the first times in 16 years in 1987, after coming out on fire in Extra Time versus Cork in the Munster SHC Final Replay to win by nine points [References: 13, 19]. Tipperary had run a marathon to win the Munster Championship by the standards of the day in 1987, having to first defeat Kerry in Round 1, before needing a replay against both Clare (in the Semi-Finals) and Cork in the Final [References: 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13, 19] . After Clare almost pulled of the shock of the Munster Championship at Killarney, the Premier County “went on the rampage” in the Replay, outscoring Clare by 4-17 to 0-8 [References: 8, 10].

In other matches the Deise had also come close to causing a shock in the First Round, losing 1-14 to 2-15 to Limerick [References: 7], who were defeated by Cork in another Semi-Final Replay [References: 9, 11]. British Provincial Hurling Champions London travelled to Carlow for the GAA All-Ireland Senior Hurling B Championship Final where they triumphed 0-20 to 1-15 against the hosts and Home Final Champions, Carlow, and thus joined the exclusive club of GAA Senior Hurling Championship Counties as their reward was to meet Antrim in the SHC Quarter-Finals. All-Ireland SHC Finals Recap (Provincial Champions and All-Ireland SHC B Champions)

Galway ended an agonizing sequence of two All-Ireland Final defeats in two years by defeating Kilkenny 1-12 to 0-9 in a tense and low-scoring All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship (SHC) Final at Croke Park on 6th of September 1987. [Reference: 23]

The All-Ireland Finals series had begun in Casement Park, Antrim where London, the British Provincial Champions and All-Ireland Senior Hurling B Champions had put up a brave fight against the Ulster representatives, who had no opposition in the Championship prior to meeting the exiles. Antrim eventually prevailed 3-14 to 1-15 [Reference: 20].

Likewise, Galway, with no opposition at this level in Connacht, were playing their first game of the Championship when they defeated surprise Munster Champions Tipperary in the Semi-Finals by 3-20 to 2-17 [Reference: 21]. Antrim were not the pushover that was expected against Kilkenny in the Semi-Finals in what was turning out to be an entertaining and highly competitive Championship [Reference: 22]. Kilkenny eventually saw off the gallant Ulster county 2-18 to 2-11, before succumbing to the Tribesmen in the All-Ireland Final. [Reference: 22-23]

Recap

The 1987 GAA All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship (SHC) Finals featured the Provincial Champions of Leinster (Kilkenny) and Munster (Tipperary) as well as Galway (the sole Connacht representatives at this level); and in a Quarter-Final Qualifying game Antrim (the sole Ulster representatives at this level) versus London (the winners of the GAA All-Ireland Senior Hurling B Championship) in a single elimination (knockout) Championship for the Liam McCarthy Cup. The SHC was at the time, and still is, the highest level Hurling Inter-County Competition in Ireland. [References: 19-23]

Recap

After Tipp’s momentous victory they went forward to meet Galway, the Connacht representatives in the All-Ireland Semi-Finals [References: 12-13]

RECAP All-Ireland SHC B Home Championship

Carlow defeated Down by a single point in the GAA All-Ireland Senior Hurling B Home Championship Final at Trim on 21st June 1987 and would go on to take on London for the All-Ireland Senior Hurling B Championship and the right to play Antrim in the GAA All-Ireland Senior Championship. [References: 8]

The SHC B Home Championship had started with a preliminary game in Newbridge in early May where Meath easily defeated host Kildare by 2-13 to 0-6 [References: 1]. The First Round games later on in May were hit by the withdrawal of Mayo, who with only 45-50 Hurling players in the county and a large amount of injuries could not take the pitch at Aughrim versus Wicklow who received a walkover to meet Carlow in the Semi-Finals [References: 2] . Carlow had knocked out Meath by five points in Round 1, winning by 3-17 to 4-9, in a high-scoring encounter [References: 3-5]. The other Semi-Final was to be contested between Roscommon, who had little trouble defeating Armagh; and Down, who had a lucky escape against Derry, needing a replay after a last minute equaliser against the Oak Leaf county in the first match [References: 4-5].

The Semi-Finals saw Down step up against Roscommon, winning 2-19 to 1-5, while Carlow were made to work against Wicklow, prevailing 1-13 to 0-12 [References: 6-7] . The Home Final, played in Trim, saw Carlow again winning narrowly, this time by just a point as they triumphed by 1-15 to 1-14 versus Down, and would go on to meet British Provincial Champions London in the All-Ireland SHC B Final. [References: 8]

RECAP British Provincial SHC B Final

London were made to fight hard to defeat Hertfordshire by just two points at the Hertfordshire home in Watford in the GAA British Provincial SHC B Senior Hurling Championship on 24th May 1987. With the victory London went on to meet Carlow, the All-Ireland SHC B Home Champions, in the All-Ireland SHC B Senior Hurling B Championship decider for a shot at playing Antrim in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Quarter-Finals. [Reference: 8-9]

RECAP SHC B Final (British SHC B Champions v Home SHC B Champions)

British Provincial Hurling Champions London travelled to Carlow for the GAA All-Ireland Senior Hurling B Championship Final where they triumphed 0-20 to 1-15 against the hosts and Home Final Champions, Carlow, and thus joined the exclusive club of GAA Senior Hurling Championship Counties as their reward was to meet Antrim in the SHC Quarter-Finals. [References: 1-2]
