GAA Rounders All-Ireland Championships Senior Men’s Finals 1976-Present [Reference: 2-19]

Report

Antrim’s Erin’s Own, having done so much to promote GAA Rounders, won the Senior Men’s All-Ireland Championship in 1977, 1979 and 1980. Tyrone’s Plunkett’s took the 1982 to 1984 Championships, and from 1986 to 1989 Lakelands from Dublin took the honours. Mayo’s Breaffy had more luck than their Gaelic Football counterparts winning the Championship from 1992 to 1995, and from 1998 to 2007 Cavan’s Erne Eagles won a record 10 times in a row. Limekiln took the honours for Dublin in 2011, 2013 and 2014, and The Heath from Laois were Champions in 2012 and then three times in a row from 2015 to 2017. Erne Eagles regained former glory with wins in the 2018 and 2019 Championshps.

About GAA Rounders

Rounders was included in the original Gaelic Athletic Association Charter in 1884 as one one of the four Gaelic Games – the others being Gaelic Football, Hurling, and Handball. It wasn’t until the 1950s, however, that any effort was made to organise the game, when the Erin’s Own Club in Antrim started a Rounders section and made efforts to promote the game throughout Ireland.The Senior Men’s All-Ireland Championship has been run since 1976, and is currently run on a Round-Robin League basis, with the top four reaching the Semi-Finals.

Waterford’s Patricia Jackman is the most successful GAA Poc Fada Camogie All-Ireland Champion, with seven titles from 2009 to 2015 inclusive. Galway’s Susan Earner has won the Championship in 2017 and 2018.[Reference: 2-6]

About GAA Poc Fada

An Poc Fada – ‘the Long Puck’ is a Gaelic Game where players use a Hurley to hit a Sliotar (ball) up the side of a mountain and down the other side in as few pucks or shots as possible.

The sport would have a similar origin to the Scottish Game of Golf. It is mentioned in the myths and legends of Ireland, when Setanta took his Hurley / Hurl and hit his Sliotar all the way from Co Louth to Co. Armagh in one go. The All-Ireland Poc Fada Championships have taken place in the Cooley Mountains in Co. Louth since 1961 in commemoration of the legendary feat.

The Irish Nationals for Women were started in 1995, with Antrim providing the lions share of winners – the top three spots on the Roll of Honour belong to Fiona Shannon (6 wins), Aisling Reilly (5 wins) and F. McKenna (4 Wins) – all Antrim.

The most recent champion has been Caitriona Casey of Cork who has won the last two, while B. Hennessey of Limerick (3 wins) and Kerry’s M. Daly and Canada’s L.F. Gilmore (1 apiece) complete the list of winners.

About

Handball is one of the Gaelic Athletic Association’s Charter sports of 1884. It is played on a court with three walls, and is very similar to the Handball played in America, Australia, Canada, and the variations on Handball, Pelota and Wallball played throughout Western Europe, and are all probably of the same origin.

Britain GAA Senior Hurling Championship Roll of Honour 1967-Present [References: 1]

London Clubs have dominated the Britain GAA Club Hurling Provincial Championship with only Glen Rovers of Hertfordshire in 1987 and Warwickshire representatives John Mitchell’s (Twice) and St. Chad’s breaking their stranglehold on the competition since it began in 1967.

London winners have been Cu Chulainns, Brian Boru, St. Gabriels, Desmonds, Sean Treacy’s, Brother Peatrse, Robert Emmetts, Fr. Murphy’s and Kiilburn Gaels.

GAA Camogie All-Ireland Senior Championship O’Duffy Cup 1932-Present [Ref: 1-3]

Report

Camogie is the Gaelic Athletic Association’s Ladies version of Hurling, or indeed Hockey. It is 15-a-side and the pinnacle of the game is the All-Ireland Senior Championship. The O’Duffy Cup is for the County Championship, and was first won in 1932 by Dublin, who have won it 25 times to 2017. Cork have won the Cup a record 28 times, Kilkenny 13 times, Wexford 7 times, Antrim 6 times, Tipperary 5 times and Galway twice.

Kerry beat Wicklow 2-21 to 2-08 in the 2011 Christy Ring Cup Final, and Wicklow lost the Final the following year 4-18 to 1-17 to the Exiles of London. Kildare beat Kerry 4-18 to 2-22 in 2014,but Kerry won again in 2015, this time beating Derry 1-20 to 0-12.

The Christy Ring Cup is the Tier 2 All-Ireland County Championship in Hurling, named after the great Cork player.

From its inception to 2018 it was a Double-Elimination Cup (dubbed the “Back Door” by the Press) and in 2019 was changed to two groups of 4, playing a Single Round-Robin with Semi-Finals & Final.

Rollof Honour

Rounders was included in the original Gaelic Athletic Association Charter in 1884 as one one of the four Gaelic Games – the others being Gaelic Football, Hurling, and Handball. It wasn’t until the 1950s, however, that any effort was made to organise the game, when the Erin’s Own Club in Antrim started a Rounders section and made efforts to promote the game throughout Ireland.The Senior Ladies All-Ireland Championship has been run since 1970, and currently is run on a Round-Robin League basis, with the top four reaching the Semi-Finals.
